Granular material contg. sulphur and carbon prepd - by reacting a heavy residue with sulphur in a diluent

An infusible and insoluble granular S-contg. material is prepd. by reacting a heavy petroleum fraction and sulphur while stirring in the presence of reaction medium. The products can be used as fillers, reinforcing agents, oil absorbants, intermediates for CS2 prodn. etc. and are esp. useful for the prodn. of granular carbon and activated carbon. The reaction medium reduces the viscosity of the reaction mixt. (giving a denser product of higher mechanical strength), suppresses agglomeration, and suppresses carbonisation, the product is highly reactive (e.g. for CS2 prodn.) and can be converted into activated carbon with a very high specific surface (>2000 m2/g).
