The device has four clamping elements (50, 54) for receiving the pipe ends, two hydraulic piston-cylinder units for adjusting the clamping elements and two guide rods (10). Each guide rod is firmly joined to the piston within the associated cylinder, guided in bearings in the region of both ends of the cylinder so as to be axially slidable and sealed by means of sealing elements. Two clamping elements are arranged on the cylinders (40) of the piston-cylinder unit and two clamping elements are arranged on the guide rods. Fewer components than hitherto are required. Access to the weld point is facilitated.
