By reducing the thermal inertia in the electrical heating plate the delay characteristics are improved and the design also allows the heating intensity to be visually observed. The hot plate comprises a sealed vacuum enclosure (11) of glass which houses the electrical resistance heating element (12). The cooking utensils are placed on a flat upper surface (13) against which the element is placed. The element zig zag across the surface and is maintained in position by two rigid conductors (14). Glass to metal welds ensure sealing of the conductors. On the lower surface of the enclosure is a reflective coating (16) to reflect heal upwards. The colour of the elements is visible through the translucent upper surface.
