A method and apparatus of shaping a can (100) by rotating the can on a chuck (65) whilst applying rolls (90) to the outside of the side wall so as to push the side wall inwardly into one or more waists. Typically, the can is held against a lifter pad (50) by air pressure between the chuck and the base of the can. A push ring may be used to load the can side wall axially, whilst still allowing the side wall to flex freely during forming. To this end, the chuck is carried by a spindle which has a smaller radius than that of the chuck. |
