The axle body (1) is manufactured from a sheet steel blank, in the form of half-shells (2) with an axle cover which forms an oil seal, and which can be reinforced with annular flanges, for fixing purposes. The half-shells, together with the cover, are formed in one piece from the blank by stamping and shaping. The body may have a gap (4) which is formed by the shaping process, and which is on the side which faces away from the cover. The gap may extend longitudinally over the entire length of the body, and may also form a circular receptacle (5) which is arranged centrally opposite the cover to accommodate a transmission component.
