SUBSTANCE: water stream is treated to selectively remove corresponding sulfate by way of bringing water stream and oxygen in contact with oxidation catalyst at pH below 12 and oxygen to sulfur molar ratio higher than 5:1 under oxidative conditions chosen for selectively converting at least 95% of inorganic sulfide compound into corresponding sulfate.
