PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively and simply obtain a cyclopentenone derivative useful as an intermediate for perfumes and medicines by reacting a specific intermediate compound with lead tetraacetate. SOLUTION: A production intermediate of formula I is reacted with lead tetraacetate to provide the objective compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is preferably obtained by reacting an α-pyrrone derivative of formula III in a water-containing organic solvent (preferably water-acetone mixed solvent) in the presence of a base (preferably triethylamine), preferably at 30-70 deg.C for 3-50 hr. A mixed ratio of the organic solvent with water is preferably 1-10 organic solvent to 10 water. The base compound is preferably used in an amount of 2-4 mol based on 1 mol compound of formula I which is a raw material. The intermediate of formula I can be isolated and purified from reaction mixture by extraction, liquid separation, thin layer chromatography, etc. The reaction of compound of formula I with lead tetraacetate is carried out in an organic solvent (e.g. glacial acetic acid or acetonitrile). |
