PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aqueous ink composition having a high printing concentration. SOLUTION: This ink composition comprises a surface modified carbon black which has <1 second penetration time at 1 mg/cm2 application amount, is obtained by introducing a hydrophilic functional group to at least water and a carbon black having the ratio of specific surface area/DBP absorption of 0.3-2.5 and is dispersible and/or soluble in water without using a dispersant.
