PURPOSE:To obtain a bright display with low electric power consumption by disposing a light reflection plate and a light source under the display surface of a homogeneously oriented guest-host type panel, and disposing a polarizing plate in such a way that the light from the light source is polarized to illuminate the above-described oriented substrate surfaces. CONSTITUTION:For example, a liquid crystal panel 36 is constituted of dye molecules 27, liquid crystal molecules 28, an upper substrate 39, a lower substrate 30, upper electrodes 31, and lower electrodes 32. A luminous body 35 and a polarizing plate 34 are disposed in the lower part of the panel 36, and the axis of polarization of the plate 35 is so set that the long axis of the liquid crystal molecules 28 and dye molecules 27 oriented homogeneously with respect to the substrate 30 coincide. A reflection plate 33 is disposed below the substrate 30, so that the panel is used as reflection type in the daytime or in a bright place and is used as transmission type by lighting the body 35 in the nighttime or in a dark place. In this way, the guest-host liquid crystal display of less power consumption and a bright display is obtained. |
