Area markers (35a-35f) are arranged inside the area of travel (9) of a mobile unit (13). This mobile unit contains a three-dimensional scanning device (15) with a detection range (17), in which the area of travel (9) of the mobile unit is scanned in the direction of travel (25), the area markers located therein being detected. A programme-guided control device (14) brings the mobile unit (13) to a stop when the three-dimensional scanning device (15) can no longer detect any area markers in a first safety section (18) of the detection area.
