An optical device (1) comprises a substrate (11), an optical waveguide (12), a laser diode (13), a photodiode (14a, 14b), and a filter (15). The substrate (11) includes a smooth reference surface (16) and V-grooves (17) formed in the reference surface (16). Pins (6) are engaged with V-grooves (17) in the device (1) and V-grooves (5) in a connector (2). The optical waveguide (12) is formed on the reference surface (16) and includes a core (21) and a clad (22). The core (21) extends along the reference surface (16). The laser diode (13) emits signal light of a first wavelength toward the core (21) and the photodiode (14a). The filter (15) transmits the signal light of the first wavelength and reflects signal light of second wavelength. The signal light reflected by the filter (15) is received by the photodiode (14b).
