PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such problem that, in the conventional driving method of a PDP(plasma display panel), brightness is different for every display line and the luminance of the background is so large that the contrast of the panel is lowered, sometimes. SOLUTION: In this driving method of the PDP, preliminary discharge is performed between odd numbered sustenance electrodes and even numbered sustenance electrodes and in the odd numbered (or the even numbered) sustenance electrodes, writing discharge is made to be generated with a negative polarity scanning pulse and with a positive polarity data pulse and with a positive polarity scanning pulse and with a negative polarity data pulse in the even numbered (or odd numbered) sustenance electrodes and, after that, sustaining discharge is simultaneously performed in all pixels.
