The vehicle has one or more wheels (2) driven by traction motors (3) which are supplied from a generator (5) via a DC intermediate circuit (6). The generator is coupled mechanically to the engine (4) which is also controlled by a unit (7) connected (8) to the accelerator pedal (11). When the pedal is depressed the rotational speed of a driven wheel is measured (12) and communicated (9) to a comparator (13) in the control unit. The comparison yields a set-point (14) for the driving torque which is adjusted (20) by action on the traction motors.
