PURPOSE: An optical counter for paper or bank notes without dust and noise is provided to count a paper or bank note bundle with sufficient accuracy through a simple optical system by widening space between papers or bank notes without untying the bundle. CONSTITUTION: A mono light source(2) emits mono light to the bundle(1) constantly widening the space between sheets. A lens(3) forms an image of a side of the widened bundle. A linear optical detector(4) detects the image. A control/digitizing unit(5) controls function of the detector and digitalizes a detected signal. A single device controller(6) controls/monitors/counts all functions/states of the counter. A display device(7) displays the state of the counter and a counting result.
