An image pickup device and a noise reduction method thereof are provided to acquire a smear signal, perform the low-level suppress and high-level suppress of the acquired smear signal according to the image signal level of pixels except predetermined pixels, and subtract the suppressed smear signal from the image signal level, thereby acquiring an image signal, of which the noise such as the smear signal is reduced, in a solid image pickup device without having an optical black region. Memory units(701-1~701-n) store the digital signal of a scanning line. An addition unit(702) adds the output signals of the memory units. A 1/n unit(703) makes the output signal of the addition unit into 1/n. Delay units(704,705) delay the time of a pixel. Count units(706~708) make an input signal into a signal with a predetermined magnification. An addition unit(709) adds the output signal of the count units. A high level suppress unit(710) suppresses a signal to more than a predetermined level outputted from the addition unit. A low level suppress unit(711) suppresses a signal to less than a predetermined level outputted from the high level suppress unit. A comparator(713) compares the signal level outputted from the addition unit with a predetermined signal level. A switch(712) switches a signal outputted according to a comparison result outputted from the comparator. A subtraction unit(714) subtracts a signal g from a signal A. A control unit(715) outputs a signal a, a signal b, a signal c, a signal d, a signal e, and a signal f according to an input signal. An image signal level detector(716) detects the average level of a frame or a field of an image signal outputted from pixels of an image pickup region except a smear signal detection region.
