PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display apparatus including a detachably attachable light source or a filter, preventing a user from suffering a loss since, when a non-genuine light source or a non-genuine filter is used, a maker probably cannot verify sufficiently and the user probably suffers an unexpected loss due to the use of a non-genuine light source or a non-genuine filter. SOLUTION: This projection image display apparatus with a detachably attachable light source unit includes: a storage means provided to the light source unit and having previously stored therein information that the light source unit is a genuine product; a determination means for determining whether or not the light source unit is a genuine product by checking with the information stored in the storage means; and a light source control means for controlling the output of the light source unit in accordance with a result from the determination means.
