Apparatus for supplying liquefied gas to a consumer vessel, e.g. a cryostat, comprises a liquid carrying tube 1 extending through a vacuum jacket 2, a tubular radiation shield 3 surrounding tube 1 and a heat exchanger tube 4 in contact with the radiation shield, tube 4 being supplied with gas discharged from the consumer vessel. Tube 4 is made of copper and has end extensions 42 and 41 (Fig. 1C, not shown) of thin steel, shield 3 also being made of copper and having its external surface polished. Jacket 2 is made of unpolished brass. A basket 6 containing activated carbon is mounted on the lower end of shield 3. Tubes 1, 2 and 4 are maintained in their relative positions by steel elements 8 and 9 (Fig. 1A, not shown). The apparatus may be used for transferring nitrogen, hydrogen or helium from a liquefier to a storage vessel (Fig. 2, not shown) or from a storage vessel to a cryostat (Fig. 3, not shown). |
