1,212,617. Slag product. CALUMITE CO. 20 Sept., 1968, No. 44734/68. Heading C1M. A raw material for use in manufacturing glass is formed by selecting a plurality of blast furnace slags each having a composition in the following range (weight per cent): SiO 2 20-50; Al 2 0 3 +TiO 2 2-30; CaO 15-65; MgO 0-26; Fe 2 O 3 0À1-5 ; MnO 0-13; Na 2 O+K 2 O 0-5; SO 3 <SP>2</SP>- 0-3; S<SP>2-</SP> 0-3; and free iron and magnetizable material less than 0-7; and blending, grinding and screening portions of said slags to provide a uniform product whose composition is within said range, such that in any sample taken from the blended product each of the constituents does not vary from the desired amount by more than Œ0À3% for Si, Al+Ti, Ca and Mg; Œ0-04% for Fe 2 O 3 ; Œ0'2% for Mn and Na+K, and Œ0'1% for SO 3 <SP>2</SP> and S<SP>2</SP>. The slags are preferably ground to obtain a product composed of particles, 95% of which will pass a 16-mesh screen (U.S. screen scale) and not more than 50% will pass a 100-mesh screen. The slags are preferably dried at 250- 300‹ F. for 5-15 minutes. The product is preferably sprayed with hydrocarbon oil (e.g. 30 gallons per ton of material). The product may constitute, for example, 0À5-40% of a glass batch, by weight of the sand used. The slag product may be foamed after formation. |
