A meshwork metal grid-sleeve 3 is secured to the internal surface of a metal pipe 1, e.g. a heat pipe, which may have axial grooves or capillaries 2, by inserting in the sleeve a heavy rod 5, applying blows to the outside of the pipe to cause the rod to hammer and expand the sleeve against the pipe, and finally bonding the sleeve to the pipe-bore. Bonding may be effected by welding, diffusion sintering or by vapour deposition, e.g. of Nb at 1000‹ C., which also reduces the mesh apertures and hardens the sleeve. A circular swaging machine may apply the blows, and the rod 5 may be of W. |
