The aerial comprises a primary radiator, which also serves as the nondirectional aerial, and a parabolic reflector. The latter is in two equal sections carried on a mounting bar. Each section has a frame which carries the reflector rods and is supported by a tube. The tubes are hinged to the mounting bar. In the directional state the tubes are retained by ties. If the release element in the tie is triggered the tubes hinge outwards, typically under the action of springs, until they are in line with the mounting bar. In this position they release from the bar, again spring force may be used. The axis of the aerial is typically in line with the inertial axis of the satellite so that the movement of the reflector sections and their ultimate release does not create out of balance torques which might cause the satellite to start tumbling or change its orbit. |
