Antibiotic BL 580 ZETA and its salts are prepd. by fermentation with Streptomyces hydroscopicus NRRL 11108. Thus, a preculture of S. hydroscopicus is inoculated pH 6.5 medium contg. corn steep liquor 0.5, soy bean meal 1, corn starch 4 and CaCO3 0.1% and incubated at 28-9≦̸C for 138 hr with stirring and aeration. The broth is filtered and extd. with ethyl acetate. The ex. is concd., dissolved in methylene chloride, and chromatographed on charcoal. The elute is dissolved in MeOH and chromatographed on silica gel.
