PURPOSE:To form a high-quality mirror surface at the end face of a core by short-time treatment, by contacting the end face of the core, into which an optical fiber is inserted and fixed, with a polishing liquid mixed with polishing powder of hardness lower than that of the core on a rotating polishing board. CONSTITUTION:A core 6, into which the core 5 of an optical fiber is inserted and fixed, is supported with an arm 1 and the end face of the core 6 is polished by pouring a polishing liquid 7 from a nozzle 4 onto a supporting material 2 and rotating a polishing saucer 3. The polishing effect is achieved in a short time by setting the contacting speed of the polishing liquid 7 containing 5&n30wt% of free polishing powder of hardness lower than that of the optical fiber 5 with the supporting material 2 of hardness lower than that of the polishing powder at 400&n600m/min. Moreover, since the polishing dust is buried in the lower-hardness supporting material 2 or scattered away, no polishing scratches a reproduced on the end face of the optical fiber 5. Therefore, the end face of the core 6 can be polished to a smooth mirror surface at a high speed. |
