The procedure involves a patient specific co-ordinate system defined by sensors (4) at location invariant body areas. Ultrasound image data is displayed on a monitor (9) and a point is chosen in the image to detect movement of the organ (2) in the co-ordinate system. The monitor is used as a touchscreen to select the point (P). The point path of movement is displayed (10) in the co-ordinate system with the locations of the sensors. A sensor (11) is also located on the ultrasound applicator (6) and the focal plane (E) of the image is determined. The characteristic point (P) is represented in the co-ordinate system and the plane and the end points for the movement of the organ are indicated.
