An mRNA translation control element in the coding region of the human APP gene is revealed. This stem loop structure can regulate the translation of APP mRNA and also the production of all forms of A.beta.. The latter property can play an important role in the prevention and control of Alzheimer's disease, down syndrome and other related diseases where deposition of beta amyloid may be involved.
