A fuel injection pump has an injection adjusting piston (10) which adjusts the injection beginning. The injection adjusting piston (10) is exposed during its operation to tilting moments because of its eccentric articulation to a part (3) of the cam drive of a fuel injection pump designed as a distributor injection pump. In addition, the injection adjusting piston (10) is exposed to further forces which derive from a radial hydraulic medium supply (55) at the side of the injection adjusting piston (10) opposite to its articulated joint. Together with the tilting moment forces, these further forces exercise high unilateral pressing forces in the radial direction on the injection adjusting piston. By providing a second pressure field (57), said forces which act on the injection adjusting piston (10) are compensated for and the injection adjusting piston (10) is subjected to a substantially reduced radial stress.
