Method of detecting mass flow distribution of fluid stream over plane

The method detects the distribution of a current over a plane (8) in which a narrow light path (5) is formed parallel to and around the plane. During a defined time interval, an image of particles (4) carried with the current and passing perpendicularly to the plane through the light path is recorded. The particle distribution in the image in then analysed. Preferably, the local density of the particle imaging in the image is used as a measure for the local mass flow through the plane. The particle distribution may be qualitatively compared with a previously recorded distribution.
