PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display which has one sheet of a polarizing plate and which uses a generalized mixed twisted nematic/double refraction effect mode by defining each specified range for the twist angle and the retardation value. SOLUTION: This device is a reflection type liquid crystal display device with a single polarizing plate showing an angle αbetween the polarizing plate of the liquid crystal display device and the input director, and having the twist angle ϕ and retardation dΔn. Values of α, ϕ and dΔn satisfy formula I. In formula I, H is a rotation matrix and represents formula II, and M is the Jones matrix of a liquid crystal cell expressed by formula III. In formula III, A, B, C, D are defined by A=cosϕcosβd+(q/β)sinϕsinβd, B=(κα/β)cosϕsinβ, C= sinϕcosβd-(q/β)cosϕsinβd, D=(κα/β)sinϕsinβd, wherein q=2π/p and p is the pitch of the LC cell and expressed by formula IV, and qd=ϕ, ka=P>=n/λ and Δn=ne-no. |
