PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an armature wherein short-circuiting due to brush powder is prevented near a surface commutator and yet the resistance of contact with a brush is reduced as compared with conventional ones. SOLUTION: The armature has an inner-circumference insulator 4 filled in the gap between the rear end portions 111 and 121 of an upper-layer coil piece 11 and a lower-layer coil piece 12 and fixing the rear end portions 111 and 121 to each other, in an area out of the brush sliding face 1a on the side of the inner circumference of the surface commutator 10. Since the space inside a collar 7 is sealed with the inner-circumference insulator 4, brush powder floating in the motor is prevented from entering the space to cause short- circuiting. In addition since the surface commutator 10 is not resin-molded unlike conventional ones, resin does not stick to the surface commutator 10 and thus the resistance of contact with the brush is reduced as compared with conventional ones.
