PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder improved in performance of setting paper sheets and performance of replacing a paper feed roller. SOLUTION: This paper feeder has a bottomed frame-like cassette and a paper feed roller 4, the roller shaft of which is supported on journal pieces 21 formed on both ends in the cross direction of the forward end part of the cassette. The roller shaft is formed by a plurality of hollow roller shaft pieces 19a, 19b, 19c. Springs 22 for energizing the roller shaft pieces 19a, 19b, 19c to be pulled to each other are provided in the hollow parts of the roller shaft pieces 19a, 19b, 19c.
