PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the efficiency and reliability of an alternator for vehicle. SOLUTION: The charger charges a battery by rectifying a current from the AC output terminal of an alternator through a bridge circuit consisting of an upper arm transistor and a lower arm transistor and generating a rectified output voltage between a reference voltage terminal and a rectification output terminal. The transistor has a first main terminal, a second main terminal and a control terminal wherein a diode is provided between the first main terminal and the second main terminal. In normal operation, the battery is charged by controlling the control terminal such that the transistor is turned on when a current is fed between the first main terminal and the second main terminal. When the rectified output voltage drops to a specified voltage or below, the control terminal is turned off and the battery is charged by feeding a current between the first main terminal and the second main terminal through a diode.
