The invention concerns windmills with rotating wings, whose generator is a synchronous generator which has a specially configured rotor and can be connected to the mains without an intermediate frequency converter. By providing the rotor with a multiple-phase winding which draws its current from a multiple-phase frequency converter, one can make the pole field move across the surface at a speed determined by the frequency put out by the frequency converter. By controlling the current put out by the frequency converter, one can regulate the reactive power between reactive and capacitive. By controlling the frequency and voltage in conjunction with control of the wings before the generator is connected to the mains, the generator can be synchronised to the mains without large impulse. By controlling the frequency and the rotation of the wings when the generator is connected to the mains, one can vary the number of revolutions of the wing axle and thereby achieve a variation in the kinetic energy content of the wings and the rotor. This can be utilised to reduce power variations from the generator, but also to protect the generator against overload.
