An apparatus for purifying liquids includes a housing having an interior cavity and a bottom. A purification assembly is disposed within the interior cavity. A bottle neck receiving receptacle extends upwardly into the bottom of the housing. The bottle neck receiving receptacle has peripheral shoulders, such that when the housing is placed upon a bottle with a neck of the bottle extending into the bottle neck receiving receptacle, the peripheral shoulders engage the bottle so that the housing is supported at least in part by the bottle. An outlet from the interior cavity is disposed below the purification assembly and in fluid communication with the bottle neck receiving receptacle, such that liquids must flow through the purification assembly in order to pass to the outlet and liquids passing from the outlet into the bottle neck receiving receptacle.
