PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base material for artificial leather which has both of properties in feeling phase and properties in physical phase conventionally recognized as inconsistent properties in the material for the artificial leather. SOLUTION: The base material for the artificial leather including a nonwoven fabric structure of ultrafine fiber bundles satisfies the following items (1) to (4): (1) the ultrafine filament bundle is obtained by bundling 8-70 ultrafine filaments having nearly circular cross section shapes; (2) the ultrafine filament bundle has a cross section area of 170-700μm<SP>2</SP>and a flatness ratio of≤4.0; (3) the cross-sections of the ultrafine fiber bundles in the arbitrary cross section parallel to the thickness direction of the nonwoven fabric structure are present within the range of 1,500-3,000 filaments/mm<SP>2</SP>; and (4) the space sizes among the ultrafine fiber bundles in the arbitrary cross-section in the thickness direction of the nonwoven fabric structure are≤70μm.
