PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability by preventing a voltage exceeding a gate withstand voltage from being applied to a gate terminal of a sub-switching element of a switching power supply unit. SOLUTION: The switching power supply unit has a structure in which a main capacitor 4, a switching element 1 and a sub-switching element 2 are connected in series between positive and negative poles of a DC power supply 3 and the above constituents are alternately turned on/off by control circuits 13, 10 to obtain a DC output via a transformer 6. In the switching power supply unit, a control circuit 10 prevents a voltage exceeding a gate withstand voltage from being applied to the gate terminal of the sub-switching element 2.
