PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which can obtain high image quality while reading image data at a high frame rate without performing thinning, and to provide a driving method thereof. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus mounting imaging elements provided with color pixels of first to third colors for detecting the quantity of incident light of three primary colors, and luminance detection elements arranged contiguously to respective color pixels includes a signal processing means for generating first complementary color information by adding the data of first color pixel and second adjoining color pixel, generating second complementary color information by adding the data of second color pixel and third adjoining color pixel, generating luminance information by adding the data of adjoining luminance detection elements when the data of a shrunk image is generated, and reproducing an imaged image by performing signal processing of the first complementary color information, the second complementary color information and the luminance information wherein the imaging elements has a pixel arrangement consisting of an array repeating the first and second color pixels, an array repeating the second and third color pixels, and an array only of luminance detection pixels.
