PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine compression ignition operation control device and method enabling to enlarge a compression ignition operation region without requiring an external EGR. SOLUTION: The engine compression ignition operation control device can perform compression ignition operation at a valve closing timing for an exhaust valve and a valve opening timing for an intake valve which are set so that a valve opening period for the exhaust valve and an valve opening period for the intake valve are not overlapped with each other. It comprises an operating condition detecting means S15 for detecting whether an operating condition during compression ignition operation is such an operating condition as to actualize stably continuous compression ignition operation, or not, and valve train control means S16, S17 for changing the valve opening timing for the intake valve to blow burnt gas from a cylinder back to the intake side depending on the operating condition.
