[Also in Division F1] In a dispenser in which actuation of a spray head 50 causes a propellant to offset the flow of a spray material, a cap 60 is provided to enclose the spray head 50 and form an air-tight seal with an external portion of the dispenser, the cap or a portion thereof being displaceable for decreasing the volume within the cap and hence increasing the pressure therein, in order to prevent leakage of the spray material during storage, &c. The cap may be applied to a conventional pressurized container in order to clean the discharge orifice. Preferably the cap is applied to a dispenser of the kind in which a propellant container 20 is contained within a spray material container 10, and in which the spray material flow passage is open to the atmosphere. As shown, the cap 60 fits over a portion 24 of the propellant container closure member 19, the portion 24 enclosing a valve 30, and the pressure within the cap is increased by pushing the cap down the portion 24. In alternative embodiments, the cap fits over the mouth of the spray material container (Fig. 2, not shown), or over both the mouth of the spray material container and the portion 24 (Fig. 3, not shown), or it may seal against the inner surface of the mouth of the dispenser (Figs. 4-6, not shown). The pressure within the cap may be increased by partially collapsing the cap (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). A bead (65, Figs. 4-6) may be formed on the bottom of the cap to engage in a recess (25) and act as a stop. The valve 30 includes a spring-loaded body 35 connected to the head 50 and closing an annular aperture 39 which is surrounded by a resilient gasket 32 and communicates with the discharge orifice 51. The cap may be made of polypropylene and the product container of polyethylene. The propellant may be a chlorinated-fluorinated hydrocarbon. (For Figure see next column) |
