Material stacked in room for physical and/or chemical treatment is subjected to two flows of air, gas or gas mixtures from opposite walls, in a fluctuating manner, such that the region in which the flows meet, moves back-and-forth across the room between the walls. The gas is pref. removed at right angles to the inflow direction. Method ensures even gas flow around the material.
