[Also in Division D1] An undrawn or partially drawn thermoplastic yarn is drawn by passing the yarn around at least two drawn rollers, at least one of which is heated to raise the temperature of the yarn, and is then compression crimped in a stuffer box while still at a raised temperature. Each heated drawn roller comprises a driven shaft having mounted thereon at one end an outer and an inner housing with electrical heating elements mounted around the inner housing and connected via a thermostatic controller to slip rings. Adjacent each draw roller is an idler roller inclined at an angle thereto and which may be heated in a similar manner to that of the draw roller. The "necking point" may be localized by having the first draw roller at a higher temperature than the second one or by using a draw pin. Three draw rolls may be used. A stationary heater may be placed between the last draw roller and the stuffer box-for example to allow nylon yarn to shrink. The yarn contacting surfaces of the draw rollers may be coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. Oil or other conditioning material may be applied to the yarn. |
