A method of extracting fat-soluble compounds such as a b carotene from aqueous solutions comprises: a) applying an aqueous solution containing a fat soluble compound to near the bottom of a bed of crystalline metallic ore particles held in an appropriate vessel at a rate sufficient to form and maintain a fluidized bed of crystalline metallic ore particles; b) allowing the fat soluble compound to attach to the crystalline metallic ore particles to form a crystalline metallic ore fat soluble compound complex; c) washing the complex of step b) with a wash solution to desorb the fat soluble compound from the complex; d) collecting the wash solution containing the fat soluble compound and isolating the compound from the wash solution.
