A ball valve, partic. for venting a nuclear reactor control rod drive mechanism, comprises a ball(66) between a ball seat(44) and a valve seat(70) with a central orifice(28); both seats are conical. One seat is laterally movable to the other so that the ball self-centering to the seats, when these are adjuted longitudinally to each other. The included angles of the seating surfaces are pref. different, and one seat is formed integrally with the valve body. The balve is used in a pressurized water eactor and retains proper sealing capacity after repeated use without the need for a special venting tool.
