The seed, in particular seeds which germinate under low temperature conditions, is subjected to a swelling treatment gibberellic acid solution at approximately 24 DEG C. The swelling treatment is carried out, in general, over 20-80 h, depending on the seed. The swollen seed is dried to a residual water content of 8% or more, preferably in gently moving air at 26-28 DEG C. After drying, the seed is stored until it is sown while virtually maintaining the water content. It is expedient to seal the seed immediately after the drying step into bags which prevent attack by microorganisms. To kill fungal spores and bacteria, it is possible to subject to the seed to a cleaning step with pure alcohol before the seed is subjected to the swelling treatment. Seeds with particularly hard seed coats are expediently treated, before the swelling treatment, to a pretreatment with concentrated sulphuric acid for approximately 15 minutes.
