Primary and secondary windings formed of several conductors connected in series are disposed, on the one hand, on a moving object and, on the other hand, on a stationary object, and one of these windings is supplied with electricity so as to produce a secondary voltage whose value varies as a function of the relative position of the objects. The method consists in disposing these conductors (21) at an angle other than 90 DEG with respect to the trajectory of the motion (30), and in adjusting the value of the secondary voltage by moving the conductors of the moving object transversely with respect to the trajectory of the motion of the moving object, over a fixed distance in order to produce an increase or a decrease in the linear counting for a given linear movement. Application to compensating for errors coming from imprecisions in a machine tool, or in the graduation itself. <IMAGE>
