A pressure regulating valve having a proportional magnet (40) and a distance pick-up (46) for the detection of the valve stroke for the purpose of setting the regulating pressure in a closed control loop, has a hydraulic pilot control for achieving a linear valve characteristic curve independent of volume flow with high long-term stability, in which the pressure in the pilot control chamber (35) in the closed control loop is set, by means of the proportional magnet (40), so that the distance pick-up (46) achieves the stroke defined by means of the desired value entry. The pressure in the pilot control chamber (35) can be used advantageously in plastic injection machines to influence the plasticising process.
