Automotive airbag throat and mouth construction

An automotive airbag has a throat of sheet material ending in a rectangular mouth with pockets (20) on two parallel sides to hold mounting rods (22). Each pocket is formed by folding the sheet back on itself to form a double-layer hem panel (26) which is folded back on itself adjacent to a bounding crease (24) to form a pocket with an adjacent four-layer cuff (30) extending part-way to the inner end of the panel. The hem and cuff layers are interconnected, pref. by respective lines of stitching, and a heat-shield sheet (32), partic. of neoprene, encircles the pocket, is secured to the cuff by the cuff stitching and extends from the mouth inwardly towards the airbag. The cuff may be integral with or separate from and attached to the airbag. A separate throat unit is also claimed.
