The main shaft (18) of the lathe proposed is mounted in a shaft bearing (16), defining a main axis (Z). Located one on each side of a central plane (YZ) including the main axis (Z) are a first and a second tool carrier (26; 34) which can be advanced radially and can be fitted with holders (28, 36) for tools for working the sides of a workpiece (W1) held on the main shaft (18). Facing the shaft bearing (16) is a third tool carrier (48) which can be advanced longitudinally, can be fitted with holders (50) for tools for working the front of the workpiece (W1) and can be moved into positions in each of which one of these tool holders (50) is aligned with the main shaft (18). Acting in alternation with these tool holders (50) is a countershaft (54) which can be aligned longitudinally with the main shaft (18) in order to take the workpiece (W1) from it. A fourth tool carrier (58) can be fitted with several holders (60) for tools for working the rear of the workpiece (W2) held by the countershaft (54). The working spaces required by the first and second tool carriers (26; 34) and their tool holders (28, 36) leave, between them and the central plane (YZ), free spaces (66, 68) which increase in size with increasing distance from the main axis (Z). The tool holders (50, 60) of the third and fourth tool carriers (48, 58), as well as the countershaft (54), are always located in these free spaces (66, 68).
