The bicycle gearbox, located inside the bottom bracket crank spindle chamber, consists of driving and driven plates (3, 4) which rotate relative to the chamber and have coaxial circular toothed rings (5a - 5i) projecting from their facing toroid surfaces. It has transmission assemblies between the plates, each comprising a cradle (7) pivoted in a central support (6) and containing two freely-rotating pinions (13) which mesh with one another and the toothed rings. A clutch housing (27a, 27b) is situated in the chamber (2) between the plates (3, 4) and containing spacer pistons (26a, 26b) in chambers (30). The pistons have axles perpendicular to those of the plates and apply a pressure to a component (40) which ensures the axial displacement of at least one of the plates. They are fed by a first hydraulic circuit with a master cylinder situated inside the clutch housing.
