<p>A directional antenna assembly (10) for a hand-held communications terminal includes a reflector (16) and a director (18) disposed on opposite sides of an antenna radiator element (12) to minimize body loading effects and thereby maximize available antenna gain. The radiator (12) is disposed in a first casing (14), and the reflector (16) and director (18) are disposed in a second casing (20) selectively engageable with the first casing (14). In one arrangement, the position of the reflector (16) and director (18) relative to the user is adjustable to accommodate the position of the communications terminal relative to the user, e.g. rotatable relative to the first casing (14) between two discrete positions . In other arrangements, the directional structure is selectively engageable and disengageable with the antenna radiator (42), e.g. displaceable between a retracted position within the terminal housing (41) and an extended position.</p> |
