PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coated article which is excellent in surface hardness and can retain its hydrophlicity for a long term even under outdoor exposure by applying a curable composition prepared by compounding an alkoxysilyl- group-containing acrylic copolymer with tetraethyl silicate (or its condensate) and a cure catalyst. SOLUTION: A hydrophilic curable composition is prepared by compounding (A) 100 pts.wt. alkoxysilyl-group-containing acrylic copolymer having groups represented by the formula with (B) 2-40 pts.wt. tetraethyl silicate (or its condensate) and a cure catalyst. This composition is applied to an object to be coated and is heated to 30 deg.C or higher to be cured. Preferably, the catalyst is compounded in an amount of 0.1-20 wt.% of the sum of ingredients A and B, In the formula, R1 is 1-10C alkyl; R2 is H, 1-10C alkyl, aryl, or aralkyl; and a is 0-2. Preferably, the catalyst is an acidic cure catalyst selected from acidic phosphoric esters, mixtures or reaction products of an acidic phosphoric ester and an amine, and (un)saturated polycarboxylic acids (or anhydrides). |
