The rod consists of first (I) and second (II) sections that can move relative to one another in a given direction (1), and incorporates a component (2) that can store a given amount of energy when the first section is moved relative to the first and transmit the stored energy from one section to the other subsequently. The energy storage component is in the form of an elastic compression, traction or torsion member, e.g. a compression spring (6) connected by one end to the first section and by its other end via a lever (10) and to the second section by a rack and pawl mechanism (14 - 17).
